Ryan-3200

A brief interruption on the Sprint training update for a congratulations to Ryan (for those who follow the blog, that kid in the form video I posted a couple weeks ago) on a big PR, running 9:04 for 3200 at regionals. Unfortunately only the top 2 move onto state (he was 3rd), but you really can't complain with an 14sec PR at the biggest meet of the year. Plus, as a Junior, he's still got another year. (Edit: Tonight, Ryan finished off his season running 4:15, getting 4th behind two 4:10's and a 4:13).

Once his season is done, I'll post some training excerpts from the last season so that you can get an idea of how the whole training is integrated, instead of just reading my random rants on particular topics.

The race video is below (Courtesy of Mike Stinson, whose son ran a great race to get 2nd).

That was a great time for him, but why does he not try to get in the mix? He seems to just try and hang on for a PR and not race? The 2nd place guy at least went after the winner. Just a thought, not criticizing.

  2. I;m not sure what you mean by "in the mix." He's running 2nd or 3rd for most of the race, right behind the leaders. When Parker (the 2nd place guy) moves, ryan matches it following him.

I thought it was a great tactical race. If you mean why didn't he try and take the lead, that would have been pointless. The pace was already very quick (4:27 through 1600), and the guys he was running behind all race came in with better PRs (8:5x, 9:03, and 9:08 compared to his 9:18). The goal was to get top 2 to advance to state or if not that at least get a big PR. He put himself in the race for top 2 the entire race. I don't think, tactically, he could have executed any better. Minimal surges and wasting energy while always in position to cover moves and put himself in position to get top 2.

Good job-great race. Your coaching has really helped these kids and they have talent. Great race in a very hard district. Congrad. to all.
