Rethinking Recovery: The Essentials of Rest and Resilience
Steve Magness and John Marcus rant about the “recovery industrial complex,” arguing that while recovery knowledge has improved, monetized gadgets can waste money, create psychological fragility, and give a false sense of control—especially as aging brings non-negotiable limits. They emphasize prioritizing foundational recovery: consistent good sleep (the key “canary”), adequate fueling and hydration, and managing overall life stress, noting that metrics and wearables can increase anxiety and worsen recovery. They frame recovery as building robustness through an aerobic and structural/strength base and periodizing recovery so you don’t “throw the kitchen sink” at training every day, which can blunt adaptations (e.g., ice baths after lifting). In competition phases, they recommend using only familiar modalities that make an athlete feel good and minimizing psychological stress through routine and perspective.
