Steve Magness and Jonathan Marcus discuss an updated approach to summer base building that keeps aerobic mileage as the foundation but adds “spices” year-round to prepare athletes for race demands. Instead of a reductionist focus on aerobic capacity alone, they emphasize integrating neural coordination, mechanical efficiency, and structural tissue resilience to reduce injury risk and prevent mid-season plateaus when intensity ramps up. They argue coaches should work backward from event demands (including fast starts and speed endurance in 5Ks) and progressively expose athletes to force acceptance and transmission through simple tools like strides (including fast-float-fast), hill sprints, movement-prep/general strength, medicine ball circuits, and variability on different surfaces. They note aerobic fitness adapts quickly, while coordination and tissue readiness take longer, and close by promoting the Running Scholar program.
